India's ₹100 household savings puzzle: ₹33 goes to banks, while ₹39 flows to pension funds and markets

Indian household savings are undergoing a structural shift, moving away from traditional bank deposits. The share of bank deposits in total household savings fell to 33% in FY25. Conversely, pension funds, mutual funds, shares, and debentures collectively increased their share to 39%. Despite this shift, a substantial 68% of household wealth remains concentrated in physical assets, indicating considerable scope for further financialization.

What this means

This trend implies a growing competition for funds for banks as savers seek higher returns in capital markets. Banks will need to innovate their deposit products or offer more diversified investment solutions to retain and attract household savings. It also signals a maturing financial market with increased participation from retail investors.

Most affected: Retail banking, Asset & Wealth Management, Bank deposit growth

Key takeaway: Banks should reassess their retail deposit strategies and explore opportunities in wealth management and advisory services to adapt to evolving household saving preferences.
