Apple Pay Enters India, Limited to Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard Credit Cards

Apple has launched its tap-to-pay service, Apple Pay, in India, allowing iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch users to make payments without a PIN or OTP. According to Livemint, the service is initially available only for Axis Bank credit card holders on the Visa and Mastercard networks. The system uses near field communication (NFC), a short-range wireless technology, and tokenization, which replaces the actual card number with a secure digital token for transactions. Unlike Google and Samsung Pay, Apple's service currently does not support RuPay cards or the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

What this means

While Apple's entry is a major event, its immediate impact will be limited. The restriction to one bank's credit cards and the lack of UPI integration puts it at a significant disadvantage in a market dominated by QR-code-based payments. However, don't underestimate the long game. Apple's focus on a seamless, secure experience using biometrics (Face ID/Touch ID) could set a new standard for user convenience, especially among affluent customers. For other banks, the race is on to get on board. For fintechs, it's a reminder that the tech giants can enter any market, and their tight hardware-software integration is a competitive moat that's hard to replicate. The real test will be if and when Apple integrates UPI.

Most affected: Card Issuers & Payment Fintechs

Key takeaway: Monitor Apple Pay's adoption among affluent users and its potential to shift payment behaviour from QR codes to NFC taps for in-store purchases.
