RBI has bond sales, FX swaps to manage liquidity: RBI Governor
RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra stated that the central bank possesses a range of tools, including bond sales and foreign exchange interventions, to manage surplus liquidity in the banking system. He noted that some of the current surplus liquidity would be gradually withdrawn over time. This comes as the banking system has experienced a significant increase in cash, partly due to a larger-than-expected inflow from the RBI's special forex mobilization scheme, leading to system liquidity crossing ₹11 trillion earlier in the month.
What this means
The Governor's statement reaffirms the RBI's proactive stance on liquidity management, particularly in response to the recent FCNR(B) inflows. Bankers should anticipate continued withdrawal of surplus funds from the system through both conventional OMOs (bond sales) and less conventional FX swap operations, which could impact short-term money market rates and bond yields.
Most affected: Banking System Liquidity, Bond Markets
Key takeaway: Anticipate continued RBI interventions to manage liquidity; factor potential bond sales and FX swaps into short-term treasury planning.
