RBI cuts time period for export realisation from October 1
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reduced the time period within which exporters must realize and repatriate their export proceeds back to India, effective from October 1. For goods (excluding those exported to a warehouse outside India), the revised period will be counted from the date of shipment. For services, the period will be counted from the date of the invoice. This change aims to improve foreign exchange inflows and strengthen regulatory oversight of export transactions.
What this means
This move by the RBI indicates a push to ensure faster repatriation of foreign exchange earnings, which can help stabilize the rupee and manage liquidity. For banks, this means their trade finance and foreign exchange departments will need to enforce stricter monitoring and compliance protocols for export transactions. Exporters, in turn, will face tighter deadlines, potentially impacting their working capital management and cash flow.
Most affected: Exporters, Trade finance departments, Foreign exchange operations
Key takeaway: Ensure compliance teams and client-facing staff are aware of the reduced export realization timelines and can guide clients effectively to avoid penalties.
